Teachers’ Worst Nightmare Coming to 70th and A

March 10, 2010 at 8:05am By: Mr. Wilson Posted in The Lincolnite Blog

Prepare yourselves, teachers at Pius X and Lincoln East, for you are about to be attacked by an influx of sugar and caffeine. Thanks to booming business at the Rocket Fizz at 14th and Pine Lake, a second location will open soon at 70th and A in Clocktower Shopping Center.

Hmm, Clocktower just happens to be near Seacrest Field where I will referee several soccer matches this spring. A little pre- and post-game pick-me-up? I think so!

I’m glad to see this place being successful, but I am sensing that the idea of expansion is happening too fast. I hope I’m wrong.

I agree. The store hasn’t really been open long enough to see if the popularity is part of the “ooo, new and shiny!” boost almost every new business gets in Lincoln.

I hope it succeeds, though!

7 months in that type of niche isn’t enough to see if it’s popular? I would think that after 7 months they would have weathered the ‘oooo look shiny crowd’ after about the first month or so.

Has it really been open 7 months? wow. I guess it depends on how much of their business is school kids- adults would probably (mostly) head to either location.

I’m mostly just anxious that it stays open in general.

CS, I’d say it’s nowhere near long enough to tell how it will last long-term. I’ve wanted to see it since it opened, and just got there last month. I know others that haven’t made it yet. The key is are enough people buying things, and is there enough repeat traffic.

My recommendation to people wanting to expand is always to wait at least one year - then you’ve seen every bit of an annual cycle to determine which months are up and which are down.

The other potential challenge is this - is the shop successful simply because of the shop, or because the owner is behind the counter? Once he opens two locations, he can’t be in both places at once. I’ve seen that problem be the demise of a lot of businesses.

I think the thing that gave me the most cause for the hurried growth was the article in the paper that mentions he’s already looking to Omaha as well.

Don’t get me wrong - I wish him the best. This is just an area I have a lot of experience with, so I am one who would tread with caution. I hope he can make it a huge success.

Mr. T says What they need to do March 10, 2010 at 1:34pm

What they need to do that I think would be a killer service is offer some sort of subscription/delivery service. Like you sign up and they deliver a 12 pack of some new type of bizarre or interesting soda to your house every week, or something like that.

i’m so glad that they are opening up a rocket fizz next to East.  as a student at east, i’m ecstatic.  whenever i could get the chance i’d take a trip down by southwest just to get some bottled root beer, but now it’ll only be minutes away.  i really hope it does well.  Also, does anyone know if Rocket Fizz is considered a chain?  I’ve looked at their website and they have a few locations in CA and Las Vegas, but i don’t know if it’s big enough to be a chain…

I’m I allowed to go the stereotypical teacher route and call you out on capitalization? wink

Mr. Wilson says RE: Yay! March 13, 2010 at 11:03am

I present to you: Muphry’s Law! grin

Keith says RE: Yay! March 13, 2010 at 4:41pm

Christina says I just stumbled across this March 11, 2010 at 5:03pm

I just stumbled across this blog a week or so ago. I love it! I’m always looking for new and fun things to do in Lincoln and throughout Nebraska. I visited Rocket Fizz yesterday for the first time and LOVED it. Thank you for what you do!
